What is retention sample & why retention sample is preserved?

Retention sample or control sample is a part of the batch which is representative of the released batch of a finished product that is preserved beyond its shelf life. It means retention sample is stored by the manufacturer for every batch manufactured in the manufaurining facility. It is preserved for future reference/ re-analysis in cases of market complaints or development work or any other clarification about the released batch.
